UPDATE: Hoppers Crossing has clinched a decisive victory against Mt Waverley in a thrilling T20 match on December 9, 2023, showcasing their best form in recent seasons of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. After a frustrating stretch of rainouts, the Cats finally took the field and made their presence felt with a commanding performance.
The match, held at the Hoppers Crossing Cricket Ground, saw the Cats bowl out Mt Waverley for just 140 runs in the final over. Captain-coach Simon Lambert expressed relief and excitement, stating, “It’s been frustrating the last couple of weeks… We’ve turned it upside down and gone hammer and tong from ball one.”
Lambert was in superb form, finishing the game with an impressive 71 not out as Hoppers Crossing chased down the total in just 23 overs, ending at 1-141. The aggressive batting strategy was evident, with Brett Smith claiming four wickets and Abbas Faiyaz taking three, setting the tone for a dominant bowling display.
Bibek Virk, a rising star at just 19 years old, continued to impress with his aggressive play, contributing to the team’s total by scoring at a run-a-ball pace. Lambert highlighted Virk’s recent performances, saying, “He is sensational… he made 90 odd off 70 and 50 odd off 50 in the last two games.”
The Cats’ victory comes as they gear up for their next T20 clash against Melton, the final match before the Christmas break. Lambert noted the team’s excitement for the shorter format, stating, “It seems to suit us more the shorter the game… We won the T20 competition last year and it favors the way we play. Hopefully, we can get some momentum running into Christmas.”
In contrast, Werribee faced disappointment, losing to Noble Park under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after rain disrupted their match. Noble Park set a target of 197 runs in a reduced 38-over game. Werribee was bowled out for 173 runs, with Ryan Alifraco top-scoring at 58.
Currently, Hoppers Crossing sits fifth on the ladder with Werribee in ninth place, marking a pivotal moment in the season as teams strive for better standings. As rain continues to challenge scheduling, the Cats are eager to build on this momentum and capitalize on their strong performance moving forward.
