Hume Council Pushes for Park Tribute to Migrant Communities

UPDATE: Hume Council is urging the installation of a plaque or statue at Greenvale Reservoir Park to honor the migrant communities that gathered there before its closure. The park, which has undergone extensive upgrades, is set to reopen in late December 2023, and officials are keen to commemorate its rich history.

Councillor Naim Kurt emphasized the importance of recognizing the Turkish community, which frequently held barbecues at the park. “Can there be some sort of plaque that recognizes that unofficial [Turkish] name… Ford’un Arkası?” he asked, highlighting the lack of multicultural names in the municipality. Councillor Kurt also suggested a small statue to honor the workers at the nearby Ford factory.

The closure of the park in 2014, followed by the shutdown of the Ford factory two years later, was a significant blow to both the Turkish and Ford communities. Councillor Steve Gagen expressed his excitement about the park’s reopening, stating, “It is with great joy that we see… the southern part of the park is opening with improved facilities, an additional 26 hectares of parkland.”

Gagen advocated for a tribute larger than a plaque, proposing a more substantial symbol to commemorate the Turkish community and Ford workers. “Given the culinary interest of the place, I thought perhaps a big kebab,” he suggested, indicating a desire for a tribute that reflects the cultural heritage of the area.

Councillor John Hadad pointed out that the park was a gathering place for various Middle Eastern communities, not just the Turkish. The public can look forward to accessing the revamped park in late December, which will feature upgraded footpaths, carparks, picnic areas, toilet facilities, and drinking fountains.

This development not only revitalizes Greenvale Reservoir Park but also aims to restore a sense of community and cultural pride among the diverse groups that once thrived there. As the reopening date approaches, discussions about the memorial tribute are expected to gain momentum, reflecting the community’s desire to honor its multicultural history.

Stay tuned for more updates on this important initiative that seeks to recognize the contributions of migrant communities in Hume.
