Hundreds Honor Slain Officers as Search for Gunman Intensifies

UPDATE: Hundreds of police officers are on the move today to honor their fallen colleagues while a manhunt intensifies for the gunman linked to the tragic deaths of two officers in Victoria. As 400 riders rev their engines, they embark on a solemn journey from Melbourne to the National Police Memorial in Canberra, marking the Wall to Wall Ride for Remembrance.

This year’s ride, which kicks off this morning, is particularly poignant as it follows the brutal killings of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart in late August. A special remembrance service was held before the ride, honoring them alongside Tasmania Police Constable Keith Smith, who was killed in June.

As the riders travel 850 kilometers through Sale, Lakes Entrance, and Merimbula, the emotional weight of the occasion is palpable. “With this tragedy still raw for the entire police family, the determination and fortitude of serving and retired police to honor Neal and Vadim in this way is extraordinary,” stated Inspector Georgie Swinton from the Wall to Wall organizing committee.

Meanwhile, the search for Dezi Freeman, the suspected gunman, continues with around 400 police officers actively pursuing leads. Freeman was last seen fleeing into bushland on August 26. Authorities believe he remains in the vicinity and have issued a $1 million reward for information leading to his capture. “The search will continue until we’ve explored all viable options,” confirmed Acting Deputy Commissioner Russell Barrett.

Since its inception in 2009, the event has raised over $2 million to support the families of fallen officers, solidifying its significance within the policing community. As thousands gather in Canberra, the message is clear: fallen officers are never forgotten.

This developing situation highlights the ongoing risks faced by law enforcement and the profound impact of violence on communities. As the manhunt continues and the memorial ride unfolds, our thoughts remain with the families of the slain officers and all those who serve and protect.

Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
