UPDATE: Renowned Illawarra Mercury photographer Adam McLean is set to showcase his captivating collection of candid images, capturing the essence of daily life in the Illawarra. With a special exhibition opening in December 2023 at the Wollongong City Library, this event promises to highlight the beauty of everyday moments that often go unnoticed.
McLean, who has dedicated years to photojournalism, emphasizes the power of spontaneous images over traditional, staged photographs. “For me, I’m more interested in the ‘fly on the wall’ documentary style photography,” he stated. His work reveals the unique landscapes, streetscapes, and diverse people of the Illawarra region.
Throughout his career, McLean has been inspired by iconic street photography, including the famous Max Dupain sunbaker photo taken in 1937. He believes in capturing authentic moments, stating, “You are just there, hoping to kind of capture what’s happening.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly influenced McLean’s approach. “During COVID, I would just walk the streets,” he explained, recalling a moment when he photographed a sanitation worker wearing a Darth Vader mask to engage the public about health protocols. “These moments are usually fleeting. You don’t really ever see them again,” he added.
McLean’s upcoming exhibition, part of the Illawarra Mercury’s 170th anniversary celebrations, will feature a selection of his most poignant works. This event not only showcases his artistic vision but also serves as a reminder of the stories embedded in our daily lives.
Stay tuned as the Illawarra Mercury prepares to unveil this compelling collection, inviting the community to reflect on the intricate beauty of everyday moments that define our existence.
For those interested in photography or simply seeking a deeper connection to their surroundings, this exhibition is a must-see. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the Illawarra through McLean’s lens and engage with the fleeting beauty of daily life.
