Independent MP Helen Dalton Demands Urgent Gambling Reform

UPDATE: Independent MP Helen Dalton is intensifying her fight against gambling, denouncing sports betting apps as “disgusting” and demanding immediate reforms. Following her recognition with the Uniting Political Courage Award on November 6, 2025, Dalton is calling for urgent action to combat the harmful effects of gambling advertising, particularly on young Australians.

Dalton, representing Murray, stated, “The apps and the advertising are absolutely disgusting. There are no ads for cigarettes or alcohol, so why is this allowed?” Her remarks come amidst growing concerns that the normalization of gambling culture is shifting young people’s focus from sports to betting odds. “Young people are often more interested in the betting odds than the game itself,” she added, highlighting the invasion of gambling advertisements in daily life.

The Independent MP is advocating for a swift removal of these apps, asserting they “should never have been allowed to happen.” However, she faces significant challenges due to the federal nature of gambling legislation, noting that action at the state level is difficult. “Labor is supposed to have a social agenda, but I don’t see that,” Dalton criticized, emphasizing the impact on individuals struggling with gambling addiction.

In addition to addressing sports betting, Dalton continues her push against poker machines, calling for legislative changes to hold gambling companies accountable for “ill-got gains.” “I’m continuing to push my Bill that will force gambling companies to give back stolen money to their victims,” she stated, underscoring public support for her initiative despite resistance from major political parties.

Dalton is also mobilizing a cross-bench effort targeting gambling at the state level through an independents group. This coalition aims to limit the operating hours of poker machines, addressing what Dalton describes as a pervasive issue in New South Wales, which she calls “one of the biggest losers on the issue.”

Despite the challenges, Dalton sees a shift in mindset among local pubs, suggesting they are beginning to diversify beyond pokies. “I feel a lot of the pubs are realizing they need to offer other things than just pokies,” she stated, recognizing the importance of such venues in rural communities amid rising cost-of-living pressures.

During her acceptance speech for the Uniting Political Courage Award, Dalton expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “Standing up for fairness and social justice isn’t always easy, but it’s always the right thing to do.” The award, presented by Uniting NSW/ACT, honors political leaders who demonstrate bravery and integrity in advocating for social justice.

This urgent call to action highlights the significant social impact of gambling advertising and aims to reshape the conversation around gambling reform in Australia. As this story develops, Dalton’s efforts could pave the way for substantial legislative changes aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals and restoring integrity to Australian sports culture.

Stay tuned for updates as Dalton continues to champion these critical reforms, ensuring that the conversation around gambling remains at the forefront of political discourse.
