Keilor Basketball Association Wins Major Awards for Referee Excellence

BREAKING: The Keilor Basketball Association (KBA) has just been awarded two prestigious honors by Basketball Victoria at the 2025 awards ceremony. The association clinched the titles for ‘Referee Program of the Year (Large)’ and ‘Referee Association of the Year (Tier One)’, marking a significant achievement for the club and its commitment to excellence in officiating.

This recognition highlights KBA’s impressive referee program and the strong culture of participation it fosters. Kyra Jacobson, KBA’s Technical Officials Development Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the accolades, stating, “Everyone’s really positive about it. It’s nice to see other people recognize it from outside [the club] as well.”

The awards were determined based on multiple factors, including the number of officials invited to national competitions and KBA’s representation at statewide events. Jacobson noted the association’s extensive involvement in high-level competitions while maintaining a focus on grassroots development.

Refereeing is not just a pastime at KBA; it has evolved into a viable career path. “It’s a skill or a job that nobody really sees longevity in, but it’s an absolute pathway for a lot of people,” Jacobson stated. She highlighted that many young referees are successfully pursuing their careers while officiating across the country.

Effective communication is a cornerstone of KBA’s referee training, according to Jacobson. “It’s all about effective communication and being able to explain and teach the rules, making the game better itself,” she explained. Interestingly, she added, “It’s really funny because at the end of the game you don’t want to be remembered… a good referee is not thought of.”

As KBA celebrates these remarkable achievements, the focus remains on nurturing future referees and enhancing the sport’s integrity. The association’s commitment to development and excellence is evident in its ongoing efforts to elevate the standards of officiating in basketball.

This urgent update from Keilor Basketball Association underscores the impact of strong leadership and community engagement in sports. With these awards, KBA is not only setting a benchmark for excellence but also inspiring the next generation of referees.

Stay tuned for more updates as KBA continues to make strides in the basketball community.
