Kids Shed Delivers Handmade Trains for Salvation Army Appeal

UPDATE: On September 4, 2023, the Kids Shed program made a remarkable impact by presenting four handmade trains to the Salvation Army, specifically to Sue Carantinos and Corps Officer Major Carole Smith. This initiative is part of the Salvos 2025 Christmas Appeal, highlighting the urgent need for community support during the holiday season.

Under the expert guidance of Howard Middleton and the dedicated men from Erina Community Men’s Shed, local children engaged in hands-on craftsmanship, using tools such as drop saws, bench drill presses, and belt sanders. Not only did they acquire vital woodworking skills, but they also contributed meaningfully to their community, leaving them with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

The Kids Shed program, a collaboration between the Erina Men’s Shed and the Footprints organisation, aims to empower children while fostering family support. It offers a nurturing environment where children are mentored and valued, promoting intergenerational relationships. Participants develop essential skills in woodworking, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking—all while enhancing their self-esteem and confidence.

In just under two years, the program has seen the children build not only physical objects but also their literacy and numeracy skills through practical experiences. As each train was crafted, the children learned to safely operate tools, including both hand tools and the latest technology, boosting their confidence with each completed project.

The emotional and practical benefits of Kids Shed extend beyond the children, enriching the lives of their mentors as well. As communities pull together, initiatives like this are crucial in emphasizing the importance of teamwork and social responsibility.

What’s Next? As the holiday season approaches, the Kids Shed program is poised to continue its impactful work, engaging more children and families in meaningful projects. Community members and local organizations are encouraged to support this initiative, highlighting the critical role of collective efforts in shaping a brighter future for today’s youth.

Stay tuned for further updates on how community programs like Kids Shed are transforming lives and fostering hope as we move closer to the 2025 Christmas Appeal.
