BREAKING: Kilcoy Global Foods has just announced a massive expansion of its Lance Creek export abattoir, promising to create 511 new jobs and inject $54.2 million annually into the local economy. This expansion is part of the company’s successful takeover of the facility, located just outside Wonthaggi, Queensland, and is expected to significantly boost regional economic activity.
The expansion will incorporate the latest advancements in production technology and safety protocols, aiming to increase daily livestock throughput from 300 to 800 head per day. This surge in capacity will lead to an additional $180.4 million in economic activity for Victoria within the first year of operation.
According to an economic impact report by AEAS, the expansion will add 200 direct jobs and create 311 indirect jobs, enhancing the workforce in the Bass Coast and South Gippsland areas. “The KGF Lance Creek expansion will significantly boost the local and regional economy,” stated the report, highlighting the need for an additional 300 employees and the positive effects on local suppliers and service providers.
The facility, which has been operating under Kilcoy Global Foods since 2023, is seen as a local success story. It currently processes livestock, generating a substantial economic footprint that is set to grow even more. With the proposed changes, Kilcoy plans to extend operational hours from 6 AM to 10 PM Monday through Saturday, although the Bass Coast Shire Council will review these hours at its upcoming meeting this week.
While the expansion is welcomed by many, three objections have been raised regarding noise, traffic, and environmental concerns. However, a recent report from Trinity Consultants Australia assures that the likelihood of odour complaints is minimal, even with the increased throughput. The abattoir previously processed up to 600 cattle per day before its closure in 2017, and this expansion will employ a modern wastewater treatment system to mitigate potential issues.
Council approval is expected to be a mere formality following a favorable review of the project’s compliance with local planning policies. The application has undergone comprehensive assessment, addressing concerns from the community while emphasizing the anticipated economic benefits.
As Kilcoy Global Foods moves forward with this project, the local community can anticipate not just job growth, but a revitalization of the regional economy, with all new positions being filled locally. With the expansion set to double the demand for livestock, local producers are poised to benefit significantly.
The future looks promising for both Kilcoy Global Foods and the Bass Coast region. Stay tuned for more updates as the council votes on this pivotal expansion that could transform the local economic landscape.
