Kingaroy’s Peanut Industry Sold to Local Crumpton Group

UPDATE: The Kingaroy peanut industry is back in local hands following a pivotal agreement between Bega Group and Crumpton Group. Just announced on September 11, 2023, Bega will sell its peanut processing assets in Kingaroy and Tolga, bringing a wave of relief to local growers and workers.

This sale, ending months of uncertainty, ensures that vital resources remain within the community. Pete Findlay, CEO of Bega Group, expressed his satisfaction, stating, “While it was always our preference to sell, we are pleased that the land, buildings, and equipment located in Kingaroy and Tolga will remain in local hands.”

The Crumpton Group, a fourth-generation family-owned business rooted in southern Queensland, is set to take over operations. Known for its diversified agribusiness, Crumpton has a rich history in peanut growing and processing, making it well-equipped to serve Australian peanut growers effectively. According to Sonie Crumpton, “The acquisition of these assets will allow us to better serve Australian Peanut Growers in all regions moving forward.”

Bega Group is committed to assisting its exiting workforce during this transition, having identified up to 30 potential roles with Crumpton Group. The company will provide redeployment training and support, including a job fair in Kingaroy. “Bega Group remains committed to supporting its people through this transition,” Findlay added.

The sale will be finalized in December 2025, with operations at the Kingaroy site continuing until June 2026. This timeline ensures that local growers are not left in limbo, as Crumpton Group plans to engage in discussions with them regarding the upcoming season soon.

This development marks a significant shift within the peanut industry in Kingaroy, highlighting the importance of local ownership and community support. The urgency of this transition underscores its impact on the livelihoods of many in the area, making it a critical moment for the region’s agricultural future.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Crumpton Group prepares to take charge of Kingaroy’s essential peanut processing operations.
