Lions’ Zorko Backs Rayner for Grand Final Showdown vs. Cats

UPDATE: Brisbane Lions veteran Dayne Zorko is rallying behind teammate Cam Rayner ahead of the highly anticipated AFL Grand Final against the Geelong Cats on Saturday. Zorko expressed confidence that Rayner will thrive in the intense atmosphere of the MCG, where the Lions aim to secure back-to-back premierships.

Just two weeks ago, Rayner found himself at the center of controversy during the qualifying final on September 5, where the Cats claimed victory by 38 points. He faced backlash for securing two consecutive free-kicks, which led to goals, igniting the ire of Geelong fans who jeered him throughout the match.

Zorko stated, “Cam just will be Cam. We don’t tell him to be anyone different or do anything different.” He emphasized that Rayner is prepared to face the expected hostility from Geelong supporters, reaffirming his commitment to helping the team achieve victory.

The Lions are also strategizing around another key player, Hugh McCluggage, who was effectively neutralized by Geelong’s Oisin Mullin in the previous encounter. Zorko revealed that McCluggage will collaborate with midfield coach Cameron Bruce and head coach Chris Fagan to devise a new plan for the grand final. “We probably didn’t have good enough plans in place to support Hughie,” Zorko admitted.

In a promising development, Zorko indicated that co-captain Lachie Neale is on track to recover from a torn calf injury sustained less than three weeks ago. “Sitting next to him on the plane he seemed good, seemed happy, so that’s a good sign,” Zorko said. Neale is set to undergo a crucial training session on Thursday, where his fitness will be assessed.

With the grand final just days away, the Lions are focused on overcoming their previous challenges against the Cats. Zorko’s confidence in Rayner and Neale highlights the team’s determination to rise above the pressure and seize the championship.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the showdown, and with both teams bringing fierce competition to the field, all eyes will be on the MCG this Saturday. Stay tuned for live updates as the situation unfolds!
