Little River Unveils New $1.09M Youth Space for Community Engagement

UPDATE: Little River’s Possy Newland Reserve has officially unveiled a brand-new youth space, marking a transformative upgrade for local families and the community. The official opening took place on December 5, 2023, and it is set to become a vital hub for youth engagement through sports and recreational activities.

This extensive renovation, costing $1.09 million with the support of a $50,000 state government grant, features upgraded playground equipment, a revamped sports court, and a new bouldering wall. The addition of a sheltered barbecue area and vibrant landscaping enhances the park’s appeal, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for all.

Mayor Josh Gilligan expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It is wonderful to see this transformation of Possy Newland Reserve into a district-level play space that can be enjoyed by Little River families and the Wyndham community.” He emphasized that the increased recreation opportunities will foster a strong, healthy, and connected community.

The newly established Youth Space is strategically located near the basketball court, allowing the council’s youth services team to connect with young people year-round. This area is designed to be supportive and inclusive, promoting connection, wellbeing, and active participation among youth.

In a unique community initiative, year five and six students from Little River Primary School contributed to a stunning mural that decorates the exterior, crafted by local artist Ayelet Brooks. The mural draws inspiration from the iconic You Yangs and the surrounding landscape, making it a significant landmark for the area.

As this new facility opens its doors, community members are encouraged to take advantage of the enhanced recreational offerings. The park is poised to become a cornerstone for family gatherings, exercise, and social interaction, fostering a sense of camaraderie among residents.

With its blend of artistic expression and physical activity, the youth space at Possy Newland Reserve represents a major step forward in creating opportunities for Little River’s younger population. Residents are urged to visit and experience the benefits of this exciting new development firsthand.

Stay tuned for more updates as the community embraces this innovative space designed specifically with youth in mind.
