URGENT UPDATE: A groundbreaking event titled Leaves and Threads is set to take place on September 21, 2023, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM at the Melton Library. This initiative, facilitated by the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, aims to confront the often-taboo subjects of life, death, and legacy in an engaging and reflective manner.
This event invites attendees of all ages to participate in a variety of activities, including art, reflection, and intergenerational discussions. The goal is to foster open conversations about mortality and legacy, replacing fear with understanding and compassion.
The highlight of the event will be the Bioscope tapestry, an impressive hand-embroidered creation designed by Chetan Shastri, aimed at encouraging dialogue surrounding life and death. Shastri expressed the importance of these conversations, stating,
“It’s important to speak about because it affects everyone. Talking about it can help us be compassionate towards others, it can help us live more authentically, and it can also help us confront mortality.”
Event host and independent funeral celebrant Karen Brady emphasized the importance of discussing these topics early and openly. Brady noted,
“There’s no such thing as talking about the conversation too early, because death affects everybody.”
She highlighted how the event aims to engage individuals across generations, ensuring that everyone feels included in the conversation.
The Leaves and Threads event is not designed as a grief circle or therapy session. Participants who are unsure about attending are encouraged to reach out to the organizing body for more information.
This initiative is part of the annual Dying to Know national campaign, which seeks to transform the conversation around death into one of purpose and legacy. As the event approaches, community members are urged to consider attending to help normalize discussions about life’s most profound topics.
