Major Upgrade Underway: New Roundabout Construction in Malua Bay

BREAKING NEWS: Construction has officially begun on a new roundabout in Malua Bay, a critical upgrade aimed at enhancing traffic flow and safety. The project kicked off on George Bass Drive as crews transition from the recently completed Broulee roundabout to the busy intersection of Sylvan Street and Kuppa Avenue.

This intersection upgrade is set to significantly improve efficiency for drivers traveling between Batemans Bay and Broulee. The new roundabout will feature essential enhancements, including upgraded pedestrian and bicycle crossings, new traffic lights, and improved pavement to accommodate B-Doubles on George Bass Drive. Additionally, the project includes an extension of gutters and subsurface stormwater drainage to further enhance safety.

While the upgrade will result in the loss of five parking spaces on the western end of Kuppa Avenue, local authorities assure residents that additional parking will be created at the beach end, resulting in no net loss of parking. The existing bus stop will also be relocated and raised to match the new road level, ensuring better accessibility for public transport users.

Construction is set to occur during designated hours to minimize disruption: from 7 AM to 6 PM on weekdays and from 8 AM to 1 PM on Saturdays. Residents can expect moderate traffic disruptions during this period, with an advisory to allow an additional five minutes for their travels.

The Malua Bay roundabout project is expected to reach completion by December 2025, pending weather conditions. Once the primary construction is finished, landscaping will commence, featuring native plants to enhance the area’s aesthetics and reduce noise and vibrations for local residents.

This significant infrastructure upgrade not only aims to improve traffic safety but also enhances the overall experience for both residents and visitors in Malua Bay. Stay tuned for updates as construction progresses.
