Melbourne Residents Feel Least Safe in New Safety Perception Study

URGENT UPDATE: A new study reveals that residents in Melbourne’s west feel the least safe in their homes compared to any other region in Victoria. The Victorian Community Safety Perception Report, released by the RACV and Neighbourhood Watch Victoria, analyzed 8,021 responses to the ‘How Safe Is My House’ quiz from 2021 to 2024.

The report shows that the western metropolitan area, which includes Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Brimbank, Melton, and Moonee Ponds, recorded a troubling safety rating of just 7.29 out of 10. In stark contrast, the western regional areas—encompassing Moorabool and Macedon Ranges—boasted a higher safety rating of 7.87. Notably, the northern metropolitan region, which includes Hume and Whittlesea, scored 7.56, while the statewide average was 7.66.

This report is crucial as it highlights the growing concerns about personal safety among Melbourne residents. The study indicates that the adoption of home security measures in the western metropolitan region has surged from 53% in 2021 to 63% in 2024. However, the data is mixed; western regional residents saw a decline in security system use, dropping from 45% to 43% over the same period.

Neighbourhood Watch CEO Bambi Gordon emphasizes the importance of understanding community safety perceptions. “The data shows that while crime statistics are important, people’s perceptions of safety are shaped by many factors including their environment, community connections, and personal experiences,” Gordon stated.

This alarming trend poses significant implications for community safety strategies in Victoria. As residents report heightened fears, local governments and organizations must respond effectively to restore confidence.

Residents are urged to take action, not only by enhancing their home security but also by engaging with community safety programs. The full Victorian Community Safety Perception Report is available at www.nhw.com.au.

As the situation develops, it is essential for authorities to address the growing concerns over safety in Melbourne’s west. What will be the next steps taken to enhance community security? Stay tuned for updates on this critical issue.
