Metro Tunnel Opens in Melbourne on November 30, Ahead of Schedule

BREAKING NEWS: Melbourne’s highly anticipated Metro Tunnel will officially open for passengers on November 30, over a week earlier than previously expected. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Jacinta Allan made this exciting announcement on Sunday at Sunshine station, marking a significant milestone for the $15.5 billion project.

Authorities confirmed that both federal and state governments are investing $4 billion to enhance the rail network in the region. During their visit, Albanese and Allan traveled by train into the tunnel and exited at the new State Library station for a tour, emphasizing the project’s importance to Melbourne’s public transport infrastructure.

The state previously indicated that services would commence in December, leading many to speculate about a weekend opening. However, the final safety approval from the national rail safety regulator has now paved the way for this earlier launch.

Passengers will have the opportunity to ride the new underground rail line beneath Melbourne’s Central Business District starting on November 30. Initially, the tunnel will operate at limited capacity, offering only about 30 off-peak services each weekday, representing roughly a quarter of its full potential. A complete service timetable will not be implemented until February 1, 2024.

This early opening of the Metro Tunnel is set to transform Melbourne’s commuting landscape, providing significant relief to passengers who have long awaited improved transport options. The project aims to enhance connectivity and reduce congestion in one of Australia’s busiest cities.

Stay tuned for further updates as the launch date approaches and more details about the full operational capacity are revealed.
