Mozilla Launches Free Firefox VPN for Select Users NOW

UPDATE: Mozilla has announced a groundbreaking development for Firefox users: a free, browser-only VPN is being tested for select users starting now. This initiative, first revealed in June, is finally rolling out, and users are urged to check if they are among the lucky ones.

The urgency of this announcement cannot be overstated. As online privacy concerns escalate, the availability of a free VPN directly through Firefox represents a significant step towards enhanced security for users worldwide. This VPN will allow users to mask their IP addresses and shield their browsing activity from ISPs, providing a layer of privacy that is increasingly critical in today’s digital landscape.

The rollout is currently limited to randomly selected users, meaning not everyone will gain immediate access. To check if you qualify, simply open your Firefox browser and look for a VPN setup prompt in the top-right corner of the interface. If you see it, tap the Next button to begin the setup process, which includes signing into or creating a Mozilla account.

Once enabled, the Firefox VPN will be connected to Mozilla’s established VPN network, likely utilizing the same trusted Mullvad servers as Mozilla’s paid VPN service. While the free VPN does not provide the full capabilities of its paid counterpart—such as encrypting traffic across multiple devices or offering servers in 30 countries—it still serves as a valuable tool for enhancing privacy while browsing.

According to Mozilla, the free VPN will automatically connect to the nearest available server, which typically means you will be routed through a server in your own country. While this limitation may prevent users from accessing content restricted to other regions, it still offers a significant advantage by obscuring browsing habits from prying eyes.

Mozilla has reassured users regarding data privacy, stating that they will only collect technical data necessary for the VPN’s functionality. Additionally, logs associated with user accounts will be automatically deleted after three months, and the service claims to “never log the websites you visit or the content of your communications.”

This development is particularly timely as governments and corporations increasingly demand access to personal data. By utilizing Firefox’s VPN, users can take proactive measures to minimize their digital footprint.

While it’s essential to note that the VPN may not be effective for bypassing state-level website blocks, it is still a step forward in protecting user privacy. As the rollout continues, users are encouraged to keep an eye on updates and explore the new feature if available.

Next Steps: Keep your Firefox browser updated and check for the VPN feature regularly. As Mozilla expands its testing, more users may gain access to this exciting new offering. Share this news with fellow Firefox users, as they might benefit from the enhanced security and privacy that the free VPN provides.
