UPDATE: The annual Nan Tien Cultural Festival is underway at the Nan Tien Temple in Berkeley, celebrating the vibrant Chinese Year of the Horse with an array of colorful activities and ceremonies. The festival, which kicked off on December 25, is drawing crowds eager to engage in cultural traditions, culminating in a series of significant events leading up to the Lunar New Year on February 17, 2024.
Festival attendees are experiencing a rich tapestry of activities, including meditation, lantern painting, and the exciting Lion Dance. The Venerable Miao You emphasizes the festival’s inclusive spirit, stating, “This festival is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate together, regardless of their faith or background.”
As part of the festivities, volunteers will gather for a special New Year’s Eve dinner at 10 PM, followed by a traditional pilgrimage that embodies the spirit of renewal. “This tradition allows us to let go of our past and welcome the new year with an open heart,” Ven Miao You explains.
The pilgrimage features a unique ritual where participants walk three steps and then prostrate themselves to honor the Buddha. This hour-long ceremony also includes a light offering, leading up to a countdown to midnight, where the community will collectively ring in the new year with blessings invoking harmony and success.
Families like that of Val Tomtegod and her daughter Ingeborg are enjoying the festivities, even though they are not Buddhists. “We love observing and participating in the culture,” Val shared, while Ingeborg highlighted the festival’s stunning atmosphere, saying, “The beauty of Nan Tien is what attracts us.”
