NBN 50Gbps Trial Sparks Controversy: Fact or Fiction?

URGENT UPDATE: A post in the r/nbn subreddit has ignited a firestorm of debate within Australia’s tech community, as a user claiming to be part of a secret 50Gbps NBN Enterprise Ethernet trial alleges astonishing download speeds. The post, made by a user with the handle Future_Muffin_8248, features a screenshot showing a staggering 46,059 Mbps download speed, raising urgent questions about the legitimacy of such claims.

As NBN Co continues its upgrades nationwide, this revelation has left many wondering: Is this groundbreaking technology or merely an elaborate hoax? The screenshot purportedly displays results from an unreleased Nokia ONT and a UniFi setup, but experts are quick to raise red flags about its authenticity.

TIME-SENSITIVE ANALYSIS: The post surfaced just 1 hour ago, and the account’s activity raises suspicions. With only this single post to its name, the user has responded multiple times to questions about the claim, further complicating the narrative. A video uploaded to Imgur allegedly shows a Speedtest running on Windows 11 using Aussie Broadband as the ISP, but experts highlight several technical inconsistencies.

TECHNICAL RED FLAGS:

1. **Asymmetry Issue**: The speed disparity is a major concern. The reported download speed of 46,000 Mbps alongside an upload speed of only 4,800 Mbps contradicts the principle of NBN Enterprise Ethernet, which is designed for symmetrical performance. Official roadmaps confirm that genuine high-tier services, such as the flagship 10Gbps tier, do not exhibit such a disproportionate speed ratio.

2. **Server Limitations**: The test reportedly ran on an Aussie Broadband server based in Sydney. However, given that Aussie Broadband’s enterprise products currently max out at 10Gbps, achieving 46Gbps is physically impossible. Public Speedtest servers typically operate on 10Gbps or 40Gbps backbones, making the results highly questionable.

3. **Hardware Constraints**: The user claims to use UniFi equipment, yet current gear is only optimized for 10Gbps to 25Gbps. There is no existing UniFi hardware capable of routing 50Gbps without specialized enterprise-grade components.

WHERE NBN STANDS NOW: As of December 2025, the reality of NBN’s offerings paints a stark contrast to the claims circulating on social media. NBN Co successfully launched a 2Gbps “Hyperfast” tier in September 2025, while the maximum commercial wholesale tier for Enterprise Ethernet remains at 10Gbps. New Network Termination Devices (NTDs) capable of supporting up to 8Gbps are also in deployment.

FINAL VERDICT: Experts assert that the claims surrounding the 50Gbps trial are unfounded, marking it as a “Speedtest Spoof.” While NBN Co has conducted lab trials involving 50G-PON and 100G-PON technology, these are not accessible to individual users at this time. As the tech community continues to dissect this claim, the emphasis remains: If the upload speed does not match the download on an “Enterprise” assertion, it’s likely just a clever manipulation of browser tools.
