UPDATE: Nedd Brockmann, the ultramarathon athlete who captured national attention, has just been nominated for Young Australian of the Year. The announcement comes as Brockmann continues to inspire with his monumental efforts to combat homelessness, raising a staggering $2.6 million during his epic 3,952 km run from Perth to Sydney in 2022.
At just 26 years old, Brockmann is not only a formidable athlete but also a passionate advocate for change. He founded Nedd’s Uncomfortable Challenges, empowering fellow Australians to take on personal challenges that benefit the homeless community. So far, this initiative has raised over $8 million in support of those in need.
The nominations also spotlight other remarkable individuals making significant impacts in their communities. Humanitarian Alison Thompson, aged 61, is recognized for her decades of dedication to disaster relief, starting her journey on September 11, 2001, when she provided first aid at ground zero in New York. Through her organization, Third Wave Volunteers, Thompson has mobilized over 30,000 volunteers to assist more than 18 million people in crisis zones, including Syria and Ukraine.
Additionally, NSW’s Senior Australian of the Year, Professor Henry Brodaty, is acknowledged for his groundbreaking work in dementia research, co-founding the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing in 2012. Meanwhile, Theresa Mitchell has been named Local Hero for her tireless service through Agape Outreach, which serves 1,500 hot meals weekly to the homeless.
In an official statement, Mark Fraser, CEO of the National Australia Day Council, praised the nominees: “Alison not only shows us we can all help others, she enables people to help where it is needed most… Nedd decided to help people in need and created a movement of care.”
As the awards approach, Brockmann’s journey—from a former tradie to a champion for change—serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on a community. With events like the 2024 Sydney Olympic Park run, where he plans to cover 1,000 miles in just 12 days, his commitment to philanthropy and athleticism continues to grow.
Stay tuned for further updates as the award ceremony nears, and witness how these inspiring figures continue to shape Australia’s future.
