Netanyahu Blasts Australia’s Policies After Deadly Bondi Attack

UPDATE: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urgently condemned the Australian government’s “lax policies” following the horrific terror attack at Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead during a Chanukah celebration on October 7. Speaking with key Jewish leaders in Sydney on Wednesday, he demanded immediate action to combat rising antisemitism and terrorism.

In a poignant conversation, Netanyahu reached out to Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, the spiritual leader of Chabad of Bondi, whose son-in-law, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, was tragically murdered in the attack. He also spoke with Arsen Ostrovsky, the incoming head of the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council’s Sydney office, who was among the 49 injured during the incident.

Netanyahu expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized that Australia must utilize all means available to restore safety to its Jewish communities. “These criminal acts are a result of the antisemitism running rampant due to the lax policies of local authorities,” his office stated.

The Prime Minister underscored Israel’s unwavering support for the Jewish community in Australia, asserting that there must be no concessions to terrorist demands. “I told him, Mr. Prime Minister… the worst thing we can do is reward terrorism,” Rabbi Ulman shared during a memorial event.

Rabbi Ulman recounted his emotional conversation with Netanyahu, where he urged him to remain steadfast against external pressures that may lead to compromising security. “When your friends pressure you, it’s much harder,” he noted, highlighting the delicate balance leaders must navigate in times of crisis.

Ostrovsky expressed gratitude for Netanyahu’s support, stating on social media, “Thank you, Prime Minister Netanyahu, for your words of solidarity with the Australian Jewish community in these difficult days.” He also acknowledged President Isaac Herzog for his personal outreach, emphasizing the need for a strong and united front against antisemitism.

The Bondi Beach attack has sent shockwaves through the community, underscoring the urgent need for effective measures to combat hate and violence. As the investigation continues, community leaders are calling for decisive action to prevent further tragedies.

As the situation develops, leaders in both Israel and Australia are being closely watched for their responses to this escalating crisis. The call for immediate action resonates strongly within the affected communities, as they seek to find solace and security in the wake of such devastating losses.

Stay tuned for more updates as authorities work to address the ongoing threat of terrorism and restore peace.
