Over 1,000 Surfers Honor Shark Victim Mercury Psillakis in Dee Why

UPDATE: A powerful paddleout tribute for shark victim Mercury Psillakis took place at Dee Why beach on October 21, 2023, with over 1,000 surfers joining to commemorate his life just three weeks after his tragic death. The surfing community came together, united in grief and celebration, creating a poignant tribute that stretched across both Dee Why and Long Reef beaches.

Organizers initially anticipated a large turnout, but were astonished by the overwhelming support. “We were expecting about 1,000 people here, but I’m sure, as you can see from the aerial footage, that the paddleout was chockers,” said Tash Gee, president of the Long Reef Boardriders club.

Paddleouts are traditional ceremonies in which surfers pay their respects to fellow watermen and women. Psillakis, affectionately known as “Merc,” died heroically. Witnesses confirm that he spotted the adolescent great white shark and alerted those around him to form a huddle, selflessly remaining at the back to ensure their safety. Tragically, his board was bitten in half, and he lost both of his legs in the attack.

“A paddleout is a traditional Hawaiian ceremony to farewell a fellow waterman or waterwoman, and we’ve adopted that here in Australia,” explained Gee, emphasizing the dual nature of the event as both somber and celebratory. “It was a really sombre event, but also full of everyone cheering. It’s a celebration, not a mournful event.”

Participants were encouraged to bring palm fronds instead of flowers, honoring Psillakis’s love for palms. The scene was filled with surfers taking to the water, reflecting the strength and solidarity of the local surfing community. Those present included family, friends, and fellow surfers, with Psillakis’s twin brother, Mike Psillakis, at the heart of the tribute.

Mercury Psillakis has been hailed as a “keystone” of the local surfing community, with decades of involvement that left a lasting legacy. The massive turnout underscores the impact he had on the lives of many, reinforcing the emotional ties within the surfing culture.

As the paddleout concluded, the community’s resolve to honor Psillakis’s memory was evident. Surfers and supporters, many wearing matching attire, helped to create a vibrant atmosphere amidst the solemnity of the occasion. This heartfelt tribute not only commemorates a beloved figure but also serves as a reminder of the risks associated with ocean sports.

The community now looks to heal from this loss while cherishing the spirit of Mercury Psillakis, who will be remembered for his bravery and his profound connection to the ocean. As the investigation into the incident continues, this tragic event has sparked conversations about shark safety and awareness, further highlighting the need for protective measures in surfing hotspots.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as authorities continue to address the implications of the shark attack and the ongoing support for the Psillakis family.
