Paul Kelly Releases New Single ‘Rita Wrote a Letter’ Today

URGENT UPDATE: Paul Kelly has just released his highly anticipated new single, ‘Rita Wrote a Letter’, today, marking a powerful follow-up to his iconic song ‘How to Make Gravy’. This release comes shortly after the shocking announcement of Joe’s death, a central figure in Kelly’s 1996 hit, as detailed in a viral newspaper ad published in The Age.

The death notice, which has captured public attention, stated that Joe passed away due to “sudden misadventure” and expressed sentiments of loss:

“We’ll miss you badly, Joe.”

This ad not only referenced the beloved 90s track but also highlighted the date December 21, now famously known as “Gravy Day”, when fans celebrate the song’s legacy annually.

The new single, ‘Rita Wrote a Letter’, is the first track from Kelly’s upcoming album, ‘Seventy’, set to release in early 2024. The song continues the narrative of Joe, who is depicted writing to his brother Dan from prison, sharing his emotional struggles leading up to Christmas. The poignant lyrics hint at tension, as Joe addresses Dan’s feelings for Rita:

“I know you really like her, just don’t hold her too close, oh brother, please don’t stab me in the back.”

This release comes just in time as Paul Kelly gears up for a seven-date national tour across Australia, starting later this month. Fans are eager to hear the new material live, especially in the wake of such impactful storytelling that has characterized Kelly’s work throughout his career.

The emotional weight of this release resonates deeply with fans, showcasing Kelly’s ability to blend narrative and music in compelling ways. With the passing of Joe, the story continues to evolve, keeping the legacy alive while introducing new layers to the beloved original.

Stay tuned for more updates as Paul Kelly embarks on his tour and as we await further details on the new album, ‘Seventy’, expected to captivate audiences just as his previous works have done.
