Rain Disrupts Hoppers Crossing’s Match, Draw with Bayswater Confirmed

UPDATE: Rain has again disrupted cricket in Hoppers Crossing, forcing the Cats to settle for a draw against Bayswater on July 15, 2023. This marks the second consecutive match impacted by weather, leaving fans and players frustrated as the teams were unable to complete the game.

Despite heavy rainfall leading up to the match, Hoppers Crossing managed to take the field, having posted an impressive 345 runs on day one. However, the match against Bayswater was cut short, with the teams only able to complete 67 overs before rain halted play. Bayswater ended the day on 5-220 after a shaky start at 2-18.

In a standout performance, Hoppers Crossing’s Bibek Virk and Wajh e Ali Bangash both finished on 86 not out, showcasing their batting skills despite the adverse conditions. The Cats’ bowlers, Brett Smith and Sai Surapaneni, each took two wickets, but ultimately, the game concluded without a victor due to the relentless rain.

After six rounds of play, Hoppers Crossing currently sits in fourth position on the ladder, boasting three wins, one loss, and two draws. Meanwhile, Werribee faced a similar fate as they were unable to play against Balwyn, who had scored 302 runs on day one. The Tigers now find themselves in seventh place, just three points shy of the top six.

Looking ahead, Hoppers Crossing will face Mt Waverley next Saturday, while Werribee will host Noble Park in their upcoming two-day matches. Both teams are eager to break the cycle of draws and capitalize on their upcoming opportunities.

Meanwhile, rain also impacted play on Sunday, but both Werribee’s and Hoppers Crossing’s women’s teams managed to secure results in their respective competitions. In the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket Competition shield (1), Werribee faced La Trobe University Flamewings. The Tigers batted first, scoring 3-154, with Puneet Kaur Dhillon top-scoring at 43 runs before being run out. The Flamewings clinched victory in a nail-biting finish, reaching 5-156 with just three balls to spare.

In contrast, Hoppers Crossing’s women’s side struggled in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association women’s social T20 competition, losing to Gellibrand (2). After being sent in to bat, Gellibrand (2) scored 2-134 from just 15 overs. The Cats managed only 2-54, with Sophia Raissa contributing 11 not out. They currently sit in sixth place, still searching for their first win of the season.

Hoppers Crossing will look to bounce back against Mambourin this upcoming Sunday, aiming to turn their luck around after a challenging few weeks.

Stay tuned for further updates as the cricket season continues and teams strive for victory amidst unpredictable weather conditions.
