Rainbow on the Plains Festival Returns to Hay with Star-Studded Lineup

URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated Rainbow on the Plains Festival is gearing up to return to Hay, New South Wales, from Thursday, November 13th to Sunday, November 16th, 2025. This year, the festival embraces the theme of “Transition,” celebrating growth and resilience within the LGBTIQA+ community.

This four-day extravaganza promises to deliver high-profile entertainment and significant economic benefits for Hay and surrounding areas. With star performers like Thndo and drag sensations PAULINE and ZOE BADWI, attendees can expect a vibrant celebration of pride and inclusion.

Why it Matters NOW: The festival is projected to draw visitors from across the region, providing a much-needed boost to local businesses. Accommodation is expected to reach full capacity quickly, and attendees are strongly advised to book their stays in advance to secure a spot.

Festival organizers have crafted an engaging lineup that includes events for all ages. The festivities kick off on Thursday, November 13th, at the South Hay Hotel, featuring the charismatic drag performer Shelita Buffet. The main event, “Rainbow on the Greens,” will occur on Friday, November 14th, showcasing performances by Thndo, along with several popular drag acts and DJs, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.

On Saturday, November 15th, the iconic Street Parade will fill Lachlan Street with color and celebration, followed by the Angie Fair Day at Hay Park — a free event boasting markets, food stalls, and activities for families. The festival will close with an adult-only After Party, headlined by PAULINE and ZOE BADWI, and hosted by the energetic Ringmaster ZA!

The festival’s theme, “Transition,” aims to acknowledge the journeys of self-discovery and the resilience of the trans community. It serves as a platform for rural LGBTIQA+ individuals to feel seen and included, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.

For residents traveling from nearby regions such as Central Darling, Carrathool, or Balranald, the demand for accommodation in Hay is expected to be high. Festival organizers urge visitors to secure their lodging early or consider staying in adjacent towns to support the broader regional economy.

The Rainbow on the Plains Festival has rapidly evolved since its inception in 2018, transforming from a small gathering into a central event for both community pride and local tourism. Originally conceived by local mothers as a fundraising event, it blossomed with support from organizations like ACON, leading to increased attendance and local engagement.

The festival not only highlights the importance of inclusion but also provides a vital economic stimulus to the region, particularly after the challenges posed by drought and the Covid-19 pandemic. It has consistently maintained its mission to create an inclusive environment while boosting local businesses.

As excitement builds for this year’s festival, officials encourage everyone to check the official website and social media channels for the latest updates on ticketing and event schedules. Don’t miss this chance to be part of a transformative celebration of pride and community in the heart of the Riverina!

Mark your calendars and prepare for an unforgettable experience at the Rainbow on the Plains Festival!
