Renee Watson Assumes CEO Role at Rise Above, Celebrates 40 Years of Support

Newly appointed chief executive Renee Watson has taken the helm at Rise Above, a charity dedicated to assisting local cancer patients in the Canberra region. This year marks a significant milestone for the organization as it celebrates its 40th anniversary, with formal events planned for August 15, 2023, coinciding with the birthday of its founder, Yvonne Cuschieri.

Renee Watson, a member of the well-known Watson family, has deep roots in the area. Her grandfather, John Watson, established Watson Blinds and Awnings in 1968 in Fyshwick, and the family business has been a fixture in the community ever since. Having returned to Canberra after 23 years in England, Watson is eager to continue the legacy of community involvement that has defined her family.

Reflecting on her early experiences, Watson recalls working in the family factory during her university holidays. “It was on Pirie Street, this tiny little thing. It’s much bigger now,” she noted, highlighting the growth of both her family’s enterprise and the community around it.

Watson’s professional journey has been diverse. After studying human biological sciences at the Australian National University, she co-founded the first National Cancer Research Network in the United Kingdom. While there, she also launched a manufacturing business, which she attributes to her background in the family business. She now runs a company called The Curiosity Box, which specializes in science kits.

The decision to return to Canberra was influenced by both lifestyle choices and family considerations. “I’ve got a lot of family here. The Watson family is huge. I’ve got lots of nieces and nephews,” she shared. Her son, Patrick, is currently pursuing an electrical apprenticeship, while her daughter, Anika, is in her final year at Narrabundah College and plays soccer for Canberra Olympic.

Watson’s return aligns with a critical period for Rise Above, which has seen a doubling of patient numbers in the past 18 months. The organization is actively participating in the Canberra Day Appeal this weekend, aimed at raising essential funds to support its growing service demands.

Having only joined Rise Above two weeks prior, Watson expressed her enthusiasm for the role. “This job came up and I just couldn’t resist. Too many amazing things from my random career experiences were relevant,” she stated. Her passion for community service is evident, particularly as she works alongside dedicated team members, including senior community engagement manager Bin Barnier and patient support coordinators Karina Bruce and Steph Kulpa.

Watson is committed to expanding the organization’s offerings, which range from providing fuel vouchers to assisting young cancer patients with fertility preservation. “Every dollar raised goes to help local people, with staffing costs covered by grants,” she emphasized. “Money is important, but it’s the emotional support and the knowledge that the team shares with patients that actually makes the extra difference.”

The relationships formed between Rise Above and its patients are vital, creating a supportive environment during challenging times. “That’s like the secret sauce of Rise Above – the relationships we’ve developed with patients,” Watson concluded.

For those wishing to contribute, donations can be made to Rise Above through the Canberra Day Appeal at https://handsacrosscanberra.org.au/. Watson’s leadership promises to usher in a new era for the organization, reinforcing its commitment to the Canberra community and the fight against cancer.
