URGENT UPDATE: Brimbank residents are called to action this Sunday, September 7, for a vital Wildflower Planting Day at the Iramoo Wildflower Reserve in Cairnlea. This community event aims to enhance local biodiversity and combat invasive weeds, specifically targeting the spread of serrated tussock.
Dr. Megan O’Shea, a research associate at Victoria University, announced that volunteers will plant 1,500 wildflowers to restore the native habitat. “Removing invasive species is crucial, but we must replace them to prevent further weed growth,” Dr. O’Shea emphasized.
This initiative not only supports the local ecosystem but also enhances the habitat for the endangered striped legless lizard. “We’re enriching the environment, creating a more complex ecosystem that benefits both plants and wildlife,” Dr. O’Shea explained.
Participants will receive hands-on planting demonstrations, ensuring that the wildflowers thrive long after they are planted. “Attendees will earn a ‘planting license’ to certify their skills,” Dr. O’Shea stated. “It’s a fun and educational experience, not a serious commitment.”
The planting day will also feature guided tours of the reserve and activities for children, making it a perfect family outing. Dr. O’Shea cautioned against common planting mistakes, such as planting too deep or too shallow, which can jeopardize the seedlings’ survival.
