UPDATE: More than $200,000 was raised for Telethon 2025 at the Perth Running Festival on Sunday, as over 15,200 participants took to the streets in support of Western Australia’s sickest children. This incredible event not only showcased athleticism but also highlighted the power of community and compassion.
Among the inspiring participants was Little Telethon Star Xavier Summers, who completed the 10km course in his wheelchair with the assistance of his uncle, Shannan Brown. “I was really happy crossing the finish line at Optus Stadium,” the eight-year-old exclaimed, reflecting on the numerous high-fives he received along the way.
Mr. Brown, 43, expressed his joy as they ran through the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel, describing the experience as a unique and exhilarating moment for both of them. “It’s very different and very exciting for him,” he stated, emphasizing how running behind a wheelchair was a new venture for him, akin to a “10km sled push.”
The event also saw a remarkable performance from “Team Mateo,” a group of 37 runners who collectively raised over $27,000 in honor of Mateo Domazetovski, a six-year-old fighting a low-grade glioma. His mother, Ceffra Domazetovski, completed the 4km run alongside Mateo, an achievement she feared might not be possible due to his health challenges. “It was amazing, the day was incredible,” she said, capturing the essence of the day’s spirit.
The positive atmosphere was palpable as Nia Collova, 12, and her mother Sarah Collova celebrated their finish. Nia, diagnosed with Dup15q Syndrome at just 16 months old, also shared her delight, contributing to the emotional highlights of the event.
The funds raised during this impactful marathon will be directed toward vital medical research, essential equipment, and transformative opportunities for children facing severe health issues in Western Australia.
As the dust settles on this remarkable day, the excitement continues to build around Telethon 2025, with many now looking forward to how these funds will enhance the lives of those in need. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as we continue to support the fight for better health outcomes for WA’s children.
This event not only showcased the spirit of community but reinforced the importance of coming together for a common cause. With each step taken on the pavement, participants made a difference that resonates far beyond the marathon, proving once again that every effort counts.
