South Morang Lions Embrace New Era with Coach Matt Penn

UPDATE: The South Morang Lions are entering an exhilarating new chapter under the leadership of newly appointed coach Matt Penn. Just announced, this major shift in the Northern Football League Division 2 follows the resignation of Gary Hall, who led the team to two premierships over eight seasons.

In a statement, Penn expressed his enthusiasm for stepping into the head coach role after three seasons as a senior assistant at Hurstbridge. “I’ve always been involved in footy, playing or coaching,” he said, underscoring his lifelong commitment to the sport. “It was about timing and opportunity, and this seemed like the right time to take the opportunity.”

The Lions, having finished at the bottom of Division 1 last season, are now set to drop to Division 2. This transition comes as several key players have already announced departures to other clubs. While this might seem daunting, Penn views it as a chance for fresh talent to shine. “You look at so many departures, but it opens up opportunities for others to thrive,” he noted.

With a focus on development, the Lions are poised to cultivate their young players. “There’s a young group coming through who have been through the under-19s,” Penn said, highlighting his familiarity with the club. His connection runs deep, as both of his children have played at South Morang, adding a personal touch to his commitment.

The Lions have been actively recruiting, with the biggest signing so far being Ethan Lowe, a promising young key forward eager to elevate his game. Other recent signings include Anthony Bradford and Nick Lawson, with discussions ongoing with additional players to bolster the squad.

“This will be a different method from what has been successful,” Penn stated, setting ambitious goals for the upcoming season. “We would love to bounce back up into Division 1.” His early conversations with senior players indicate a strong desire to work hard and adapt to the new strategy.

As South Morang gears up for this pivotal season, the excitement is palpable among fans and players alike. The upcoming months promise to be transformative, with Penn determined to lead the Lions into a future filled with potential and renewed vigor.

Stay tuned for more updates as the team prepares for a fresh start in the Northern Football League Division 2.
