UPDATE: St Patrick’s has officially launched their version of ‘Bazball’ as Nick Brown smashed a stunning 104 runs in a thrilling rematch against North Albury on Saturday. This explosive batting performance led St Pat’s to a remarkable total of 5-328, making waves in the Cricket Albury-Wodonga Provincial league.
Brown’s maiden century, which featured three sixes and 10 boundaries, marks a significant milestone for the player who previously recorded a ton in B Grade. “It means a lot. There’s been a lot of hard work going into it, and on an individual level, it’s certainly been a box I wanted to tick,” he stated, reflecting the emotional weight of his achievement.
In addition to Brown’s heroics, opener Neil Smith contributed 78 runs, while Liam Scammell added an unbeaten 53 off just 37 balls, showcasing the team’s aggressive batting style with seven sixes and 35 fours throughout the match.
St Pat’s aim to introduce their own aggressive style of play mirrors that of England’s cricket coach Brendon McCullum’s ‘Bazball.’ Brown noted, “We’ve seen in the past few years, ironically, from North Albury, they do it better than anyone being aggressive. They take the game up to the opposition, and as a batting unit, we’d like to tick it along a little bit more.” This approach represents a shift in strategy, as the team seeks to consistently put up high scores this season.
Last season, St Pat’s struggled, managing only 8-183 in the grand final, but this year they are determined to turn the tide. North Albury, however, managed 209 runs in this encounter, with Shannon Walsh top-scoring at 60 runs. Scott McElnea was impressive with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 23 runs.
In other matches, Wodonga delivered a commanding 187-run victory over Baranduda. The home side posted 237 runs, led by BJ Garvey’s 76 and Drew Cameron’s 41. Riley McHale was exceptional with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for 47 runs. Baranduda faced a dismal collapse, bowled out for just 50 runs in under 13 overs, with recruit Paddy McNamara taking 6 wickets for 13 runs.
East Albury also enjoyed a decisive win, defeating Wodonga Raiders by 85 runs. Englishman Alex Hinkley scored 56, while James Hodkinson secured 4 wickets for 22 runs, leading a strong bowling performance. The Raiders fell short at 85 runs, with veteran Cam White taking 4 wickets for 16 runs.
As the season progresses, teams are striving for consistency and high scoring, with St Pat’s leading the charge into a new era of aggressive cricket. Fans and players alike are eager to see how this ‘Bazball’ strategy will evolve in upcoming matches.
