Stolen Firefighting Trailer Recovered Near Beechworth After Theft

UPDATE: A stolen firefighting trailer, valued at approximately $10,000, has been recovered in rugged bushland near Beechworth, just one day after its theft from Albury. The trailer was taken from Doctors Point in East Albury on September 17, 2023, raising urgent concerns over public safety equipment as the summer months approach.

Authorities confirmed that the red single-axle trailer, used by trained community members for firefighting efforts, was found dumped near Long Range Track and Woolshed Road on Thursday. In a related recovery, a 1990 model Honda quad bike—stolen in New South Wales in 1998—was also located, along with another trailer and additional items.

The stolen property was hidden down an embankment, out of public view, prompting Beechworth police to intensify their investigation. Officers are currently collaborating with staff from Fire and Rescue NSW to assess any potential missing equipment from the damaged trailer.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Stewart Alexander expressed disappointment over the theft, especially as the region gears up for warmer weather. “

It’s a critical piece of public safety equipment. It’s designed for use by local residents, particularly when it’s warming up and heading into summer. It’s very disappointing that that capacity has been taken, but we’re working as quickly as we can to restore it and get it back online.

Superintendent Alexander emphasized the importance of this equipment for community safety and urged anyone with information about the theft to come forward. Residents are encouraged to contact local police at (03) 5728 1032 or 1800 333 000.

The theft of trailers has been an issue in the past, but fortunately, such incidents remain rare. Superintendent Alexander noted, “

Fortunately they’re usually very secure.

” However, the urgency to recover stolen safety equipment is paramount as local communities prepare for potential fire risks this summer.

As police continue their investigation, the community is reminded of the critical role these resources play in ensuring safety during fire seasons. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and how local authorities are working to restore vital firefighting capabilities.
