URGENT UPDATE: Construction has just kicked off for a new $20 million rail flyover in Sunbury, marking a significant step forward for the community. The bridge, located on Raes Road in Villawood’s Kimberly estate, aims to support the development of 2,200 affordable housing lots and enhance local infrastructure.
This newly announced project is crucial, as it will provide access to three new schools, including the Salesian College campus, along with sporting facilities, a resort-style residents’ club, childcare, and other essential community amenities. Notably, it will also open public access to a section of Jacksons Creek that has been closed for 100 years.
The construction began on October 27, 2023, with local MP Josh Bull and Villawood Properties CEO Alan Miller present to inspect the site. Bull emphasized the importance of the project for Sunbury’s future, stating, “This is an exciting milestone for a significant piece of infrastructure that will be warmly welcomed by the ever-growing and developing Sunbury community.”
Villawood is leading the bridge’s construction in collaboration with Hume Council, VicTrack, Metro, and V/Line. Authorities report that there will be no disruptions to train services during the construction, which is expected to last approximately 12 to 18 months.
“This bridge will help the timely delivery of Kimberley’s housing supply to Melbourne’s popular new north-west growth corridor,” Miller stated. He added that the project will not only provide homes for families but also create hundreds of jobs and inject millions into the local economy over the coming decade.
Calls for a second rail crossing in Sunbury have existed for years, with plans to connect Jacksons Hill with Sunbury South and the Calder Freeway receiving state government funding. However, Bull clarified that the Raes Road bridge is a separate initiative, focusing on enhancing the community’s transportation infrastructure.
As Sunbury continues to grow, residents can look forward to improved connectivity and access to essential services, making this development one to watch closely. Stay tuned for updates on this transformative project that promises to shape the future of Sunbury.
