UPDATE: Sydney is set to be a dazzling spectacle as one million revelers gather at Sydney Harbour for a breathtaking New Year’s Eve fireworks display. The countdown to midnight is officially on, with massive crowds already filling vantage points across the foreshore and water as of this afternoon, December 31, 2025.
Excitement has been building since Tuesday evening, with eager attendees lining up overnight to secure the best views. As gates opened to both free and ticketed events earlier today, the rush to claim prime positions intensified. “It’s really like the Hunger Games,” one attendee remarked, highlighting the fierce competition among crowds armed with snacks and drinks.
By midday, many popular viewing spots had reached capacity, drawing visitors from across Australia and around the globe, including attendees from India, the United States, Canada, Holland, and Hong Kong. “This was always on my bucket list,” said one enthusiastic visitor, while another joked about the challenges of queuing and waiting, saying, “We’re going to be sick of each other.”
Security is a top priority this New Year’s Eve, with a substantial police presence ensuring safety amidst concerns following the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. More than 3,000 watercraft, from small boats to luxury yachts, are also vying for the best spots on the water, with one boater declaring, “There’s no better spot in the world to watch the Sydney Harbour fireworks.”
At 11 PM, the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge will be lit in white, displaying a menorah in remembrance of the victims of the Bondi Beach attack. Despite the festive atmosphere, some apprehensions linger regarding security; however, David Mooney, a 29-year-old attendee from Ireland, expressed confidence in the crowds, stating, “With everyone in such good spirits, you almost feel a bit of safety in numbers.”
In a disappointing turn of events, the City of Wollongong has canceled its New Year’s Eve fireworks due to dangerous swells predicted to impact safety. The council stated, “Due to the height of waves impacting the break wall, it has been determined that the fireworks cannot be safely released.” While the fireworks show is off, the summer carnival at Lang Park will proceed as planned.
As the clock ticks down to midnight, all eyes are on Sydney, where the world-famous fireworks display promises to be a spectacular send-off to 2025. Stay tuned for live updates and more coverage of celebrations across the country.
