UPDATE: The Sydney Marathon has made history today as it officially joins the prestigious World Marathon Major series. This momentous event took place on September 17, 2023, attracting 35,000 runners to the streets of Sydney in a showcase that has put the city firmly on the global running map.

The marathon, held on the last day of winter, witnessed outstanding performances from elite athletes. Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands shattered the women’s race record with a blistering time of 2:18:22, while Ethiopia’s Hailemaryam Kiros claimed the title for the men with an astonishing finish of 2:06:06, marking the fastest marathon time ever recorded in Australia.

The race kicked off at 6:30 AM from Milsons Point, leading runners across the iconic Harbour Bridge and through Sydney’s vibrant landmarks, including the stunning Opera House. The course, known for its challenging hills, provided a picturesque backdrop as participants ran towards Centennial Park and back through the heart of the city.

With the sun shining and temperatures reaching a comfortable 19 degrees Celsius, the atmosphere was electric. Runners, both elite and amateur, cheered each other on, creating an uplifting sense of community.

Notably, legendary marathoner Eliud Kipchoge participated in the race, finishing in ninth place. He praised the course, stating, “It’s a beautiful course. There is no other in this world.” Kipchoge’s endorsement is expected to help elevate the marathon’s profile further, as he expressed hopes for the event to attract over 55,000 participants next year.

The impact of this event goes beyond just athletic achievement. It promises significant economic benefits for the city, with thousands of international visitors flocking to Sydney for the marathon. These visitors will not only participate in the race but will also explore local attractions, dine at restaurants, and enjoy the vibrant culture, spreading the word about Sydney’s beauty.

The success of the Sydney Marathon marks a new chapter for the city, elevating its status among elite international events. As officials and organizers celebrate this monumental achievement, the world will undoubtedly be watching for next year’s race, eager to see how Sydney continues to shine.
