URGENT UPDATE: Thousands of prospective students flocked to the University of Newcastle on August 16, 2023, for an exhilarating Open Day, showcasing a myriad of academic pathways. With over 5,000 visitors attending, attendees were eager to discover their future careers in fields like education, nursing, engineering, medicine, and science.
Among the enthusiastic crowd, Tiarna Baer, a Year 12 student from Toronto High School, expressed her ambition to study occupational therapy at the Callaghan Campus next year. “I want to work with children specifically,” she noted, highlighting her desire to help them achieve their milestones. She emphasized the importance of the Open Day in understanding the university experience, stating, “It’s good to learn more about the courses, the pathways, how it works day-to-day, and how I can have that uni study life balance.”
The Open Day featured a variety of engaging activities, from live music to interactive demonstrations, providing a vibrant atmosphere for all attendees. Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, Vice-Chancellor of the university, welcomed everyone, saying, “Whether you’re a future student, a curious local, or just keen to soak up the atmosphere, everyone is welcome. If you’re thinking about studying, Open Day is the best place to start.”
Also in attendance was Sharni Morris, who traveled from Coffs Harbour with her family. Aspiring to study chemical engineering, she aims to represent Indigenous women in a traditionally male-dominated field. “I’ve heard great things about the university and its support for Indigenous students, making it a welcoming and culturally safe spot to study,” she said.
The event ran from 9 AM to 3 PM, offering a platform for current Year 12 students to receive guidance on the Early Entry program ahead of the first-round deadline on September 24. This opportunity has relieved exam-related stress for many students, including Tiarna, who has also selected a Bachelor of Psychological Science as her second preference.
As the university continues to serve as an educational pillar in the community for over 60 years, Open Day is not just for high school students. It’s also a chance for those looking to return to study or explore new career paths.
Looking ahead, the Central Coast campus will host its own Open Day on August 30, from 10 AM to 2 PM, at its Ourimbah and Gosford locations, promising more opportunities for prospective students to engage with the university’s offerings.
