Urgent: Activists Vandalize US-Australia Memorial in Canberra

BREAKING: Pro-Palestine activists have vandalized the Australian-American Memorial, also known as The Eagle, in Canberra, labeling the monument a “toxic” symbol of the nations’ alliance in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. The incident occurred just before noon on Saturday, where demonstrators sprayed red paint at the base of the 79-metre column, representing bloodshed in Palestine.

Footage from the scene reveals two individuals clad in plastic gear, one of whom wore a face covering, using a fire hydrant to spray red paint onto the monument. Placards attached to their backs read, “Stop US weapons for genocide.” The activists stated their actions are a direct response to the escalating violence following Hamas’ attacks on an Israeli music festival on October 7, 2023.

Protester Miriam Torzillo expressed the group’s sentiments, stating, “Now, rather than symbolising friendship between the United States and Australia, it is symbolising this partnership, which is contributing to genocide in Gaza.” She emphasized the need for the Australian government to distance itself from the US and halt collaboration with American weapons manufacturers implicated in the conflict.

The activists are deeply concerned about reports suggesting that Australia supplied components for fighter jets utilized by Israel. They are committed to amplifying their message, even in the face of potential political indifference.

ACT Police confirmed they are aware of planned protests in the region that may continue until Tuesday. Authorities affirmed their support for peaceful demonstrations but warned against any disruption to businesses or illegal activities.

In a related development, the Greens party is urging the federal government to coordinate food aid drops amid alarming reports of severe food shortages threatening countless Palestinian lives.

This vandalism marks a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue surrounding Australia’s foreign policy and its implications in global conflicts. As tensions rise, observers will be watching closely for further developments in this unfolding situation.

Stay tuned for updates on this urgent story as it develops.
