URGENT UPDATE: Hume’s only Pacific Island Playgroup is fighting to secure its future amid rising concerns over the operation of the Broadmeadows Community Hub. Just announced, the playgroup celebrated Tonga Language Week on August 18 with vibrant Tongan food, song, and dance, showcasing the significance of cultural identity for local Pasifika families.
Founded by Greens Northern Metropolitan MP Anasina Gray-Barberio, the playgroup serves as a crucial support system for children and families with Pasifika heritage. “The credit goes to the mums,” Ms. Gray-Barberio stated. “Often Pacific Islanders are stigmatized – this early childhood intervention is crucial for their success.”
However, the playgroup’s future is now in jeopardy as discussions continue regarding the hub’s operations. “This is one of the few places in all of Hume that has indoor and outdoor spaces for playgroups. We hope the council takes us into consideration and ensures the space is still here for us,” Ms. Gray-Barberio emphasized.
The playgroup, which meets every Monday from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, is more than just a gathering; it represents a vital connection to cultural roots for the families involved. Regular attendee Mava Tuitupou, who has been part of the group since its inception, shared, “I didn’t realize I needed a place as much as this. It’s been really positive. I get to bring my kids to be with others like them – to learn about our culture. It can be tough growing up in Australia and trying to connect to your Tongan roots.”
This unique initiative is the only one of its kind in northern Melbourne, making its preservation essential for the community’s sense of belonging. Families from all backgrounds are encouraged to join the playgroup, which not only nurtures cultural identity but also fosters friendships and support networks.
As the situation develops, community members are urged to advocate for the playgroup’s continuation at the Broadmeadows Community Hub. Stay connected with the latest updates and join the conversation on Instagram at @pacificislandplaygroup.
The urgency for action is clear: the future of this vital community resource hangs in the balance. Share this story and raise awareness about the importance of preserving cultural connections for future generations.
