Urgent: Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Calls for 12,500 Donors Now

URGENT UPDATE: The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has issued an immediate appeal for 12,500 additional blood donors to address a critical shortage exacerbated by unprecedented winter demand. This urgent call comes as appointment cancellations peak and seasonal bookings decline, severely impacting blood reserves across the nation.

Specifically, 4,350 donors are needed in Victoria alone to stabilize supplies and ensure that patients receive the care they need. Lifeblood’s plea follows alarming data showing that demand for blood reached record levels in June, July, and August, coinciding with the highest cancellation rates since the COVID-19 pandemic.

CEO Stephen Cornelissen stated, “We’re urging anyone who is eligible and feeling healthy to book a donation immediately. Right now, we need donors of all blood types.” He emphasized that the combination of increased winter demand and appointment cancellations has created a “perfect storm” for blood supply.

As the health sector grapples with ongoing challenges, one blood donor is needed every 18 seconds in Australia to support patients undergoing cancer treatment, major surgeries, trauma care, and childbirth. Each donation has the potential to save up to three lives, making it critical for eligible individuals to step forward.

“This winter hit particularly hard,” Cornelissen noted, highlighting the urgent need for immediate action. “We’ve seen a spike in cancellations due to cold and flu, but this year was especially challenging. We need those healthy enough to donate to help restore our blood stocks.”

To take action, Australians can book a donation by calling 13 14 95, visiting lifeblood.com.au, or downloading the Lifeblood App. Donors of all blood types are encouraged to contribute, especially those who have never donated before.

This is a critical moment for Lifeblood and for countless patients relying on transfusions. Share this urgent message and help save lives today!
