Urgent: Cyber Attack Disrupts Major European Airports Today

UPDATE: A significant cyber attack has just disrupted operations at major European airports, including Heathrow, the busiest in the continent. This serious incident, reported earlier today, has led to numerous flight delays and cancellations across several locations, leaving passengers in chaos.

The attack targeted Collins Aerospace, a key provider of check-in and boarding systems. As a result, Heathrow Airport confirmed that they are experiencing technical issues affecting departing passengers. The situation is evolving, with Brussels Airport and Berlin Airport also reporting similar disruptions.

According to RTX, Collins Aerospace’s parent company, selected airports are facing a “cyber-related disruption” to their MUSE software. They have not disclosed the perpetrator of this attack but emphasize that they are working diligently to resolve the issue.

At Heathrow, 651 departures were scheduled today, with reports indicating that 29 flights have already been canceled. Brussels Airport reported 228 departures, while Berlin Airport had 226 scheduled, all facing significant delays. Passengers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

The impact of the incident extends beyond just these airports. Dublin Airport and Cork Airport in Ireland are also experiencing minor disruptions. Passengers have been informed that the issues primarily affect electronic check-in and baggage drop, but can be mitigated by manual check-in operations.

Authorities are treating this situation with utmost seriousness. Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security, known as BSI, is in contact with Berlin Airport regarding the disruptions. Meanwhile, the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre is collaborating with Collins Aerospace and affected UK airports to assess the full impact of the attack.

The emotional toll on travelers is palpable. Tereza Pultarova, a journalist at Heathrow, described the chaos, stating, “Unfortunately, the airline I’m with … they don’t have a service desk here, so we’ve been left in the dark. It’s been great chaos, and it’s been quite frustrating for most people here.” As confusion reigns, passengers are left waiting for clarity on their travel plans.

As of now, the situation remains fluid, with authorities urging travelers to stay informed and check for updates directly from their airlines.

The broader context reveals an alarming trend of increasingly sophisticated cyber and ransomware attacks targeting critical infrastructure globally. Cybersecurity experts warn that such incidents highlight vulnerabilities in essential services when relying on third-party suppliers.

The impact of today’s cyber attack is expected to ripple through the European travel network, with passengers advised to remain vigilant and proactive in managing their travel plans. More updates will follow as authorities work to stabilize the situation.

For the latest information, check airport websites and stay tuned for further developments.
