UPDATE: Albury police have just announced a major road safety operation enforcing double demerit points starting December 24, 2023, and running until January 4, 2024. This initiative is part of a comprehensive festive blitz aimed at ensuring that all travelers reach their destinations safely during the busy holiday season.
Authorities are focusing on key issues including speeding, alcohol, drugs, dangerous driving, and distracted driving. Albury Inspector Scott Trewhella emphasized, “Basically just all those general things that contribute largely to road trauma.” The increased presence of the Traffic and Highway Patrol command, in collaboration with local police districts, aims to deter unsafe driving behaviors.
The operation commenced last night, with Wodonga officers also joining the holiday enforcement efforts. Inspector Trewhella reiterated that double demerits will apply to offenses such as speeding, failing to wear motorcycle helmets, not using seatbelts, and mobile phone violations. He stated, “This is a time where we see a lot more people on our roads, and we just need people to slow down, take care, and drive safely.”
In addition to the enforcement, Rob Austin, executive director of Transport for NSW, urged motorists to exhibit patience amidst expected heavy traffic and delays. He noted, “We want everyone to arrive safely wherever they are going over the summer holidays. Please prepare before you go, slow down, and take extra care on the roads.”
In a related safety reminder, police in Bright are urging bicycle, e-bike, and e-scooter riders to wear helmets after a recent serious incident where a rider lost control and crashed into a tree at the Mystic Bike Park, necessitating a high-angle rescue. Remarkably, the rider was wearing a helmet, highlighting its importance. A police spokesperson stated, “We’re encouraging everyone to wear their helmets. We’re getting lots of people coming into town at the moment, and it’s important they wear their helmets.”
With the holiday season approaching, it is crucial for all road users to adhere to safety guidelines and regulations. The enforcement of double demerits serves as both a deterrent and a reminder of the responsibilities that come with increased traffic during this period. Stay safe and ensure you follow all road safety measures.
