Urgent: Online Retailers Exploit Bondi Terror Attack for Profit

UPDATE: Two online retailers are under fire for attempting to profit from the recent terrorist attack in Bondi Beach, which occurred on December 14, 2023. The controversy has escalated as these businesses face backlash for exploiting the tragedy amid a national grieving period.

An online store named Isla and James, claiming to be based in Bondi Beach, launched a clearance sale while announcing its closure due to the attack—despite being registered only a week after the incident. The company falsely stated that one of its founders, James, had been shot during the attack. Shopify, the platform facilitating the store, suspended its ability to process orders on Thursday.

Chief Executive of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, Michele Goldman, condemned the actions as “abhorrent.” She emphasized, “It is disgraceful to exploit the grief of Australians coping with the worst terror attack in our history.” Goldman highlighted the community’s desire to support genuine victims rather than allowing generosity to be diverted to fraudulent intentions.

The store’s website featured a troubling statement claiming, “During the Bondi Beach shooting, James was shot. In seconds, the life we were building collapsed.” The message concluded with a plea for shoppers to purchase items before the store’s permanent closure, further raising eyebrows regarding its legitimacy.

Moreover, Bondi United, another retailer, has emerged selling commemorative merchandise and soliciting donations for victims’ families. However, its terms of service state it has “full discretion” on fund allocation. This raises serious concerns about transparency and accountability in the aftermath of the attack.

The Bondi United website includes a note from the owner stating, “I realized, in the days after December 14th, that doing nothing wasn’t an option I could live with.” However, this retailer has also had its store disabled by Shopify due to similar concerns, emphasizing the growing scrutiny over businesses capitalizing on tragedy.

Local MP Kate Spender expressed her disgust at the behavior of these retailers, stating, “This is disgusting behavior. There are many genuine victims and heroes of Bondi, including local businesses that supported the community.”

As outrage mounts, authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious online activities that may exploit the tragedy. The community’s grief is palpable, and many are rallying to support legitimate efforts to help those affected by the attack.

With investigations underway and the national conversation shifting towards accountability, it remains critical for consumers to remain vigilant. The actions of these retailers are not just a matter of business ethics but touch upon the profound emotional scars left by the Bondi Beach tragedy.
