Urgent Warning: Wyndham Drivers Must Observe School Zone Limits

UPDATE: Drivers in Wyndham are urgently reminded to adhere to school zone speed limits as term four begins this week. With students returning to classrooms, Mayor Mia Shaw emphasizes the critical need for caution around school crossings during peak travel times.

Effective immediately, speed limits of 40km/h will be enforced on weekdays throughout the school term, both in the mornings and afternoons. “Lowering the speed limit to 40km/h is essential for the safety of children traveling to and from school and helps manage the increased traffic during drop-off and pick-up periods,” Cr Shaw stated.

As the school year resumes, Cr Shaw is calling on drivers to be vigilant and respectful of crossing supervisors. “We ask drivers to be patient, drive slowly enough to come to a safe stop at school crossings, and to comply with the crossing supervisor’s stop sign before proceeding,” she added.

Students are also reminded to remain vigilant. “Follow the directions of the crossing supervisor, wait until all traffic has stopped, and only cross when indicated. Avoid running, playing, or bouncing balls while crossing,” Cr Shaw urged.

With many students preparing for their final exams, it is crucial that everyone in the community plays their part in ensuring a safe environment. “Let’s finish the end of the school year safely,” she concluded.

As the new school term kicks off, both drivers and students are urged to prioritize safety in and around school zones. This developing situation calls for immediate attention from all road users to prevent accidents and ensure a smooth start to the academic year.
