Wyndham’s $270M Law Court Complex Opens for First Hearings

UPDATE: Wyndham is set to transform its judicial landscape as the new $270 million law court complex officially opens on Monday, November 10, 2023. Judges will hear their first cases in the state-of-the-art facility, marking a significant moment for the region.

The complex, located adjacent to the Werribee Police Station, is a cornerstone of the Wyndham Justice Precinct, uniting multiple jurisdictions including the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria, the Children’s Court of Victoria, and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). This monumental opening is expected to support nearly 53,000 court hearings by 2036.

During a media preview on Tuesday, November 6, Victorian Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny emphasized the complex’s importance, stating, “This facility will enhance access to justice for the community and provide a vital resource for legal proceedings.”

The complex features 13 courtrooms, four hearing rooms, and 26 holding cells, designed with cutting-edge technology for remote hearings and digital evidence display. This modernization aims to streamline the judicial process in Wyndham and the broader western metropolitan region.

Following the initial hearings in the magistrates’ and children’s courts, Ms. Kilkenny noted that VCAT is anticipated to follow soon, although a specific date has not yet been confirmed. This complex is the largest court facility outside of Melbourne’s central business district, representing a major investment in local justice infrastructure.

Werribee MP John Lister, present at the opening, highlighted the economic benefits, stating, “When we invest in justice, we are not only investing in the legal system but also creating more job opportunities in the legal profession for our community.”

The complex is set to introduce a Koori Court and a Specialist Family Violence Court by 2027, featuring safe environments tailored for victim-survivors of family violence and their witnesses. This initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to addressing critical social issues within the judicial system.

The official opening ceremony concluded with a poignant welcome to Country and a smoking ceremony, reinforcing the cultural significance of the site within the community.

As the countdown to the first hearings begins, residents are eager to see how this new complex will enhance legal efficiency and accessibility in Wyndham. Stay tuned for the latest updates as this story develops.
