UPDATE: In a startling turn of events, two young burglars sought refuge at the Albury Police Station during a break-in spree that has left local businesses reeling. The incident unfolded just after 12:45 AM on November 25, 2023, when a man sleeping above the Thick as Thieves café chased the intruders into the station amidst a series of thefts targeting eateries in the area.
Video footage obtained from Thick as Thieves captures the alarming moment as two boys, estimated to be aged between 8 and 14, ransacked the café. One suspect was seen ripping out a cash register, while the other rummaged through a refrigerator. This marks the fourth burglary incident at this café alone this year, highlighting a troubling trend for local businesses.
“They just wreck stuff,” said owner Hanna Kadi. “Our computers are down, and we haven’t had time to sit down and look at them to see if we can fix them. We’re a small business.”
Despite the damage, Thick as Thieves reopened for business on Tuesday, with a damaged window visible at the front. Nearby, Monumental Ice Creamery also faced destruction, as a small metal shifter was used to smash its front window, discovered early Tuesday morning. Owner Matthew Vogel expressed his frustration, stating, “It’s just disappointing. It’s a pain in the arse.” He lamented the downtime and loss of business, particularly on a warm day.
The Monumental Ice Creamery was previously targeted twice in July and August, and it appears this recent wave of burglaries is part of a larger pattern affecting numerous eateries across the region. Reports indicate that businesses in Howlong, Jindera, Lavington, Albury, South Albury, Wodonga, White Box Rise, and the Birallee Shopping Centre have all faced similar break-ins, with rocks and other items used to smash windows.
Local police are actively investigating these incidents. As stated by Vogel, “There was a real spate of them over winter.” He noted that while the recent intruders did not steal anything this time, their actions have caused significant disruption. “They lifted up the protecting rolling guard of the ice cream display cabinet, but it doesn’t look like they’ve taken anything,” he added.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information to step forward by calling 1800 333 000. The community is on high alert as these alarming incidents unfold, reminding residents of the urgent need for increased security measures.
