Protests Erupt as President Trump Dines in Washington Restaurant

US President Donald Trump encountered protests denouncing him as ‘the Hitler of our time’ during a rare public dinner outside the White House.

US President Donald Trump faced protests during a dinner outing at Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab in Washington, D.C., on the evening of March 15, 2024. The visit came as a reflection of his administration’s push to showcase a crackdown on crime in the capital, but instead turned into a confrontation with demonstrators who labeled him “the Hitler of our time.”

As Mr. Trump made his way to the restaurant, which is located just a short walk from the White House, protesters gathered to voice their dissent. Video footage shared on social media captured the crowd chanting slogans such as “Free DC” and “Free Palestine,” targeting the president’s policies and rhetoric.

“I’m standing right in the middle of DC,” Mr. Trump remarked to reporters before entering the establishment. He asserted that his efforts had transformed the city, stating, “This was one of the most unsafe cities in the country. Now it’s as safe as anywhere in the country.”

The president’s dining experience was notable as it marked his first meal at a Washington restaurant since returning to office in January. Throughout his initial term, he frequently visited the Trump International Hotel nearby, which closed in 2022.

While he attempted to enjoy his dinner, the presence of protesters highlighted the ongoing tensions surrounding his presidency. Mr. Trump has spent much of his tenure either at the White House or at his private clubs in Florida, Virginia, or New Jersey. Recently, however, he has shown a willingness to engage more publicly. On March 10, he attended the men’s final of the US Open in New York, where he received a mixed reaction from the crowd.

In the lead-up to his restaurant visit, Mr. Trump had deployed the National Guard to Washington as part of a broader strategy to address crime, despite a reported decline in crime rates within the city. The White House has been keen to promote the number of arrests made since the president declared a crime emergency, although many of these arrests pertain to minor infractions.

The US attorney’s office in Washington has faced challenges in securing indictments from grand juries, leading to the downgrading or dismissal of several cases. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness of the president’s crime-fighting initiatives and the overall safety of the capital.

As Mr. Trump concluded his evening, the polarized atmosphere surrounding his presidency remained evident, underscoring the complexities of his leadership and the public’s response to his policies.
