UAE Expands Aid Deliveries to Gaza Through Cyprus Sea Corridor

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to enhance its aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip by establishing a maritime corridor from Cyprus. This initiative, as outlined by Minister of State Lana Nusseibeh, aims to provide essential humanitarian support to the region, which has been severely impacted by ongoing conflicts. The maritime route will work alongside existing land and air access points to ensure a steady influx of pre-screened aid.

Nusseibeh emphasized the significance of maintaining multiple access routes into Gaza during her visit to the port of Limassol in Cyprus. “As this plan moves forward, access to Gaza by land, air, and sea is going to remain critical,” she stated. The UAE has partnered with Cyprus to facilitate the delivery of substantial amounts of aid to the Palestinian enclave, which has endured extensive destruction due to a two-year war.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, even following a ceasefire agreement reached last month between Israel and the Hamas militant group. This agreement was part of a broader plan presented by US President Donald Trump, which paused hostilities that escalated after a cross-border attack by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023. The ceasefire also included provisions for the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

Despite the pause in violence, humanitarian organizations have reported that aid reaching Gaza is still insufficient. As of Tuesday, approximately 22,000 tons of pre-screened aid have been dispatched from Cyprus under the Amalthea Initiative, launched last year. Some of this aid reached Gaza directly through a temporary pier established by the United States, while additional shipments were sent to the port of Ashdod in Israel.

The UAE’s commitment to scaling up aid is a response to the urgent needs of the Gazan population. The maritime corridor is expected to serve as a vital lifeline, enabling the flow of essential resources. Humanitarian agencies continue to advocate for increased access and support for those affected by the ongoing crisis, highlighting the necessity of robust international cooperation to address the humanitarian needs in Gaza.

As the situation evolves, the UAE’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to providing relief and support to communities affected by prolonged conflict, underscoring the importance of comprehensive and multi-faceted approaches to humanitarian assistance.
