UAE Expands Gaza Aid Efforts via New Cyprus Maritime Corridor

The United Arab Emirates is set to enhance aid deliveries to Gaza through a new maritime corridor from Cyprus, according to Minister of State Lana Nusseibeh. This initiative aims to complement existing land and air routes, addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the region following a prolonged conflict.

Nusseibeh described the maritime route as a “vital lifeline” for the people of Gaza during a recent visit to the port of Limassol in Cyprus. The UAE has collaborated with Cyprus to facilitate large quantities of pre-screened aid, which is crucial for residents of Gaza, who have been severely impacted by a two-year war.

During her inspection, Nusseibeh emphasized the importance of maintaining multiple entry points into Gaza. “As this plan moves forward, access to Gaza by land, air, and sea is going to remain critical,” she stated, highlighting the need for a robust logistical framework to ensure the efficient delivery of humanitarian assistance.

In a significant development last month, Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas agreed to a preliminary phase of a plan put forward by former US President Donald Trump. This agreement temporarily paused hostilities that escalated following a cross-border attack by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023. The deal also included provisions for the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, marking a crucial step towards stabilizing the region.

Despite the recent ceasefire, humanitarian agencies have expressed concern over the insufficient amount of aid reaching Gaza. On Tuesday, reports indicated that only a fraction of the required assistance was being delivered, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the enclave.

Under the Amalthea Initiative, approximately 22,000 tons of pre-screened aid have been dispatched from Cyprus. Some of this aid reached Gaza directly via a temporary pier established by the United States last year, while additional shipments were sent to the port of Ashdod in Israel for further distribution.

As the UAE and Cyprus work together to scale up aid efforts, the focus remains on ensuring that humanitarian access to Gaza is sustained and expanded. The commitment to providing essential supplies underscores the urgent need to support the people affected by the ongoing conflict, as efforts continue to stabilize the region and provide relief to those in need.
