NBL Coaches Innovate Strategies to Face NBA Star Zion Williamson

The upcoming “NBA x NBL” exhibition series marks a significant moment for Australian basketball, as the New Orleans Pelicans prepare to take on Melbourne United and the Phoenix. Coaches from both NBL teams, Josh King of Melbourne United and Dean Vickerman of the Phoenix, are planning unconventional strategies to counter the threat posed by NBA superstar Zion Williamson. This series, taking place on March 15 and 17, 2024, is the first of its kind in Australia.

King has expressed his intention to break away from traditional tactics, suggesting that pressing the Pelicans could be a viable option. “Everyone always says you can’t press in the NBA, but we’re at least going to try it like once or twice,” he stated with a smile. Despite the risks, he emphasized the need to experiment, saying, “There’s our game plan.” Acknowledging the challenge posed by Williamson, a two-time All-Star, King maintained a focus on his own team’s development. “We’re just going to play our game and work on some things that we need to improve upon,” he added.

Melbourne United currently leads the NBL standings with a perfect record of 3-0. However, they will face a formidable opponent in the Pelicans, who arrive with a leaner Williamson, claiming he feels the best he has since his college days. The Pelicans’ head coach, Willie Green, is eager for this exhibition to serve as a competitive warm-up for the season ahead. He hopes to guide the revamped team back into playoff contention, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a competitive spirit.

Vickerman, on the other hand, is contemplating various defensive strategies to contain Williamson. “We might try to build a wall there to try and stop him getting to the rim,” he said, eliciting laughter from reporters. He acknowledged the challenge of matching up against such a dynamic player, stating, “It’s a great challenge.”

The exhibition series not only highlights the growing relationship between the NBA and NBL but also provides an opportunity for Australian teams to test their skills against elite competition. Both coaches are aware of the potential for injuries and are hopeful for a safe series.

As the Pelicans prepare for their matches in Melbourne, Green noted the importance of sharing the basketball and building team chemistry. “We want to start our games extremely competitive,” he remarked. With a blend of excitement and anticipation, the series promises to deliver a thrilling showcase of basketball talent, bridging the gap between the NBA and NBL.
