The City of Canada Bay has announced the expansion of the Chiswick Community Garden at Blackwall Point Reserve, enhancing the area’s appeal and encouraging greater community engagement. This upgrade includes new facilities aimed at fostering connections among residents and promoting sustainable gardening practices.
Enhancements to the Community Garden
The expanded Chiswick Community Garden now features additional garden beds, compost bins, and upgraded fencing. These improvements are designed to support a growing membership, allowing more local residents to cultivate and share fresh produce. Mayor Michael Megna emphasized the importance of community gardens in fostering social ties and improving overall health. He stated, “Community gardens are wonderful examples of how communal green spaces can bring people together and improve people’s health and wellbeing, and this expansion provides more local residents the space to get involved.”
The project was made possible through a partnership between the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program and the City of Canada Bay, highlighting a collaborative effort to enhance local amenities.
Public Amenities Upgrade
In addition to the garden expansion, significant improvements have been made to the public toilet facilities at Blackwall Point Reserve. The renovations include new fixtures and fittings, a new roof with a skylight panel, and a relocated entry to enhance accessibility for all users.
According to Mayor Megna, these updates reflect the Council’s ongoing commitment to providing accessible and well-maintained public amenities. He noted that such enhancements are essential for supporting community wellbeing and ensuring that public spaces remain inviting for everyone.
The upgraded facilities and expanded garden are expected to attract more visitors to Blackwall Point Reserve, reinforcing its role as a vital part of the community landscape. As residents take advantage of these new resources, the City of Canada Bay aims to strengthen neighbourhood connections and promote healthy lifestyles through gardening and outdoor activities.
