Kirsten Sivyer, an accomplished artist based in Australia, has captivated audiences with her unique ability to capture light in her paintings. Initially inspired by her childhood drawings of animals, she has spent over a decade honing her craft and establishing a successful career in fine art.
Sivyer’s journey into the art world began in earnest after her parents encouraged her to pursue a more stable career path. Despite their concerns about the financial viability of becoming an artist, she decided to study fine art, gaining valuable experience while sharing a studio with fellow artists in Perth. This environment provided her with practical insights that complemented her academic education.
Artistic Evolution and Inspiration
After moving to the Goldfields region of Western Australia, Sivyer embraced the vast landscapes around her. Armed with a camera, she explored the natural beauty of the area, capturing images that would later inform her paintings. Her work as a photographer for a local newspaper also contributed to her artistic growth, as she began to win awards that bolstered her reputation.
While residing in the Wheatbelt region, Sivyer found a new source of inspiration in the atmospheric effects of smoke on landscapes. She described her fascination with the optical phenomena created by smoke, stating, “I was chasing the smoke as I like the atmosphere it creates. You get this really cool prismatic lighting effect.” This experience influenced her artistic style, emphasizing the importance of light over subject matter in her work.
Sivyer’s technique involves creating a blend of “hard and soft edges,” resulting in a hazy, ethereal quality that invites viewers to engage with her art on a deeper level. “The atmosphere of the light makes me feel something, and you can’t really put it into words, so I put it into paintings,” she explained. Her goal is to evoke emotions through her art, particularly the nostalgic feelings associated with low evening light.
Medium and Market Reach
Primarily working with oil on canvas, Sivyer appreciates the medium’s texture and versatility. She describes oils as enabling her to build up layers and create striking light effects that enhance the richness of her finished pieces. “Oils are just so beautiful as they allow you to create beautiful light effects that really glow,” she noted.
Recognizing the importance of reaching a wider audience, Sivyer also accepts commissioned works from clients beyond her local area. Each year, she completes more than half a dozen commissions, which can range from recreations of her previous works to highly personalized pieces. Given the time-consuming nature of her art, each project often takes weeks or even months to finalize.
In addition to her painting practice, Sivyer shares her expertise through one-on-one art sessions with private students. With her extensive experience as an art teacher, she aims to inspire the next generation of artists while continuing her own exploration of light and atmosphere in painting.
For those interested in viewing her work or commissioning a piece, Sivyer maintains a portfolio on her website, kirstensivyer.com. Through her art, she continues to illuminate the beauty of the landscapes that inspire her, transforming light into a powerful medium of expression.
