The Look First Op Shop in Donald, Australia, has made notable strides in its community support initiatives and renovations in recent months. Thanks to a grant from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), the Op Shop has upgraded its facilities, including new flooring in the kitchen and sorting room, as well as fresh carpet on the shop floor. These improvements come as the shop continues to play a vital role in supporting local and international causes.
As of now, the Op Shop is supported by 18 volunteers, each bringing unique skills to the table. Their collective efforts have enabled the Op Shop to donate a remarkable $15,590 to 24 local organizations throughout the year. Recipients include community groups such as the Donald P&A Society, the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal, and several local sports clubs, ensuring that the funds are directed where they are most needed.
Supporting Those in Need
Beyond local efforts, the Look First Op Shop has also extended its reach internationally. Donations have been sent to various countries, including Indonesia, where contributions have helped a child attend school, and to Ukraine and Niger, where boxes containing essential clothing items like jumpers and scarves have been dispatched.
Humanitarian aid has also been targeted at victims of natural disasters, with funds sent to Compassion Australia for those affected by the devastating typhoon and flooding in the Philippines, as well as to Samaritan’s Purse for relief efforts in Gaza. The ongoing Ukraine appeal remains a critical focus for the committee, which aims to provide assistance as long as the conflict persists.
The funds raised have been utilized for practical support, including medical supplies for frontline troops and gifts for families affected by the war. Currently, efforts are underway to purchase Christmas gifts, such as comforting toys for traumatized children who have lost family members in the conflict.
Community Engagement and Future Goals
The Look First Op Shop operates within the Donald Shared Shop, located at 81 Woods Street, where a variety of used furniture items are available for purchase. The Op Shop is grateful for the community’s support and encourages local residents to shop within the area.
Recently, the committee expressed concern over a significant drop in income over the past 15 weeks, prompting discussions about the overall impact on local retailers. The team remains optimistic about future support and is committed to continuing their charitable work.
For those wishing to contribute to the ongoing Ukraine appeal, donations can be made to the designated account: BSB 633000, Account 164448821, with the reference “Ukraine Appeal.”
The Look First Op Shop, through its dedicated volunteer base and community engagement, continues to make a positive impact both locally and internationally.
